End and Beginning (15)
âAlright. I appreciate the help.â
I dropped my guard and loosened up.
Yeah. Heâs the kind of person whoâd die for someone else, after all.
Maybe Iâd overreacted. Guess I was just on edge lately.
âThanks for trusting me.â
He looked visibly relieved, like heâd been nervous himself.
âYou two shooting a drama without me or something?â
âHe said heâs helping us, shut up.â
I jabbed Yiul in the ribs with my elbow, and that finally shut him up. Min Hajun watched us with a curious look.
âYou two⊠seem really close?â
âI told you, weâre on a hey-you basis.â
âYou talk down to literally everyone you meet.â
âWhat? Iâm polite to old folks, you know.â
I reached over again to shut Yiul up before he could dig himself deeper.
âAnyway, donât mind him. Long story.â
âI just didnât expect Wind to have anyone heâs actually close with. Thatâs new.â
Thankfully, Hajun didnât seem to think much of Yiulâs complete lack of manners.
âHeâs coming with us, right?â
âYeah. Heâll get inside on his ownâyou donât need to worry.â
âGuess itâd draw more attention if the guild got involved, huh.â
Considering Yiulâs anti-social streak, getting him tied up with Transcendence would only make things more suspicious. âWind joins a guildâ? Yeah, thatâd make headlines.
âYeah, yeah. Unlike baby Hunter Yuha, Iâll come in later on my own. Go ahead first.â
Yiul waved his hand lazily, as if shooing us away. Then, catching my glance, he clutched his sideâapparently my earlier hit had left an impression.
I just shook my head and followed Hajun toward the gate.
At the gate entrance, we were logged in as Min Hajun of Transcendence Guild + one guest. Just like that.
And Iâd spent days struggling to get in before this. Great.
âThanks to you, that was easy.â
âWell, guild membersâ entries are all handled by the guild anyway.â
Especially when your guildmasterâs basically a walking golden ticket. I wouldnât have doubted either.
Inside, it was nightâtwo enormous moons hung overhead, larger than Earthâs. Though⊠could you even call them moons?
Looks like one has a ringâŠ
A faint halo shimmered around the bigger one. The alien sight drove home the fact that this wasnât Earth. Still, the twin moons gave off enough light to see by.
âLooks like the fightâs already over. Shall we head in?â
The ground was littered with mangled remainsâcut, scorched, unrecognizable.
The first wave of hunters seemed to be handling things fine.
âYou didnât come here for something else, did you?â
âWell, since Iâm here anyway, might as well clear it before leaving.â
Come to think of it, Hajunâs outfit was way too casual for a gate run. Last time, heâd been fully geared up. Today? A T-shirt, joggers, andâ
White sneakers. Who raids a gate in white sneakers?
One step in and theyâd be soaked in blood and muck.
âYouâre gonna regret that laundry later.â
âHuh? Haha, Iâll try to be careful.â
When I pointed at his shoes, Hajun just laughed lightly. I didnât pry further; he was helping us, after all.
âIâm here to clear it too, so letâs go together. Let me know if you find the gate core.â
âYouâre not waiting for him?â
âWind? Heâs not a kidâheâll catch up.â
The earlier party seemed to be progressing fast, so I started feeling pressed for time.
If someone else destroys the core first, thereâs no point in me being here.
Not like I could ask them to hold off. Whoeverâs in a rush moves first.
I led Hajun deeper into the gate. The thick green moss underfoot gave off a faint, fishy smell.
Thud!
After a short walk, I heard a dull impact behind me. Turning around, I saw Hajun pointing at the ground.
âNot a high-ranked one, apparently.â
At our feet, a giant centipede, bigger than a man, writhed with its body impaled. Hajunâs voice was calm.
âLooks like a scavenger that came to feed on corpses.â
Its countless legs kept twitching restlesslyâstubborn thing.
âLetâs move before more show up.â
I approached and cleanly sliced off its head. The creature convulsed violently for a few moments before finally going still.
Best to finish them properlyâhalf-dead monsters tended to lash out.
Hajun watched quietly, then dismissed his ice spear and nodded.
âRight. This way?â
He pointed toward an untouched pathâno signs of people. Smart choice; following blood trails would just draw more beasts.
The other hunters seemed to be doing fine without casualties, so they wouldnât need us.
We didnât know where the core was yet, so it made more sense to move fast with fewer people.
We headed into a dense forest. The towering trees blocked out the twin moons, making it darker.
âThe groundâs slipperyâwant to hold onto my sleeve?â
âIâm fine.â
I steadied my stance to avoid slipping. Maybe he offered because Iâd grabbed his sleeve back in that desert pyramid.
Shhhâ
The only sound was the rustling of leaves in the wind. Somewhere distant, a faint cry echoedânot threatening, just eerie.
âWas today your day off?â
Seeing no immediate danger, I struck up a conversationâmy way of thanking him for coming.
âYeah, actually. I was just visiting my mother.â
âOh, I hope I didnât mess up your plans.â
âNot at all. Iâd already said hello and was heading home.â
His expression softened. Clearly, he had a good relationship with his family.
âThe weather was nice, so I went for a walkâand happened to see you sitting there.â
âThatâs quite a coincidence.â
Running into someone like that, in such a vast place, was almost impossibleâespecially since Iâd never even been near that gate before.
âA lucky coincidence.â
He smiled, placing a hand on a nearby tree as he scanned the surroundings, then turned back.
âThanks to that, Iâm having an unexpected kind of day.â
âYouâre not teasing me for dragging you into a gate, are you?â
His light tone made it easy to tease back.
âOf course not. Itâs hardly trouble⊠and definitely worth coming in for.â
âYou mean you could clear something like this with your eyes closed?â
âWell⊠that too.â
The tension eased completely. It barely felt like we were inside a gate anymore. Maybe Iâd grown strongerâor maybe this one was just easier.
A comfortable silence passed before Hajun spoke again.
âTo be honest, I was really worried.â
âAbout me?â
âYeah. Iâm glad to see you looking healthy again.â
I didnât know what to say. Iâd brushed off all his concerned messages with a simple âIâm fine.â
âI mustâve looked pretty weak back then.â
Not that I was, but collapsing twice in front of him probably said otherwise.
âI was more worried because Wind took you away so suddenly. You know how secretive he is about everything except his skillsâŠâ
A polite way to say he didnât trust Yiul. I clicked my tongue internally. Yiulâs terrible social skills really left an impression everywhere.
âI was fine. Just passed out from using too much mana.â
âYou did see a healer, right?â
âYeah. Surprisingly, heâs kind of meticulousâapparently went and got one while I was unconscious.â
Hajunâs eyes widened. Yeah, I get it. âYiulâ and âmeticulousâ donât exactly go together.
âThatâs⊠unexpected.â
âHeâs not⊠all that bad.â
I bit back the urge to mention his constant naggingâfor the sake of future cooperation. At the end of the day, he wasnât truly a bad person.
âHe might lack teamwork, but Iâve seen him save people. Heâs not a bad guy.â
Hajun nodded in agreement, and I quietly sighed in relief. The last thing I needed was those two at each otherâs throats.
We walked in silence for a while after that.
âLooks like somethingâs coming.â
Hajun stopped and conjured an ice spear. A rancid stench drifted in on the wind, making my nose wrinkle. I wrapped myself in a light aura of mana, ready to move.
Ssshhhkâ
Something nearby was burning. But we still couldnât see it. Just as the tension peaked, Hajun struck first.
Kieeeek!
The sound of a spear piercing flesh echoed, and then a massive monster burst into view, shrieking.
âSo that one earlier was a baby.â
âNo wonder itâs pissed.â
I nodded, the theory making sense.
The creature was enormous, its long body writhing as it clacked its jagged mandibles together with a sharp snap.
The ice spear lodged in its side looked tinyâlike a toothpick. Hajun summoned a larger, sharper one and pulled me back.
But before we could get clearâ
âthe monster charged straight at us.
âWatch outâ!â
