Chapter 8
The Ancient Ship and the Invitation to the Future
When we arrived in Gearberg, Captain Reina was waiting to welcome us.
âGood work. I knew you could do it.â
âI just⊠acted on instinct. But Iâm really glad it worked out.â
âThatâs exactly why I was waiting for youâto invite you aboard the Luvinas. Think of it as a token of gratitude.â
âWait, really? You mean it?â
âIn fact, the fleet commander himself said he wants to meet you.â
âThe fleet commander⊠wants to meet me?â
The fleet commanderâthat meant the top officer of the Third Fleet, the one Captain Reina belonged to. Normally, someone like me would never get the chance to meet someone like that.
âSo? Will you accept the invitation?â
âOf course I will!â
âThatâs great, Skye!â
âDonât forgetâitâs thanks to me, you know?â
âExcuse me? It was my guidance that made it possible!â
âOh yeah!? You wanna go right now!?â
Why do these two always end up fighting so quickly
âAlright, letâs put that aside for now. Letâs head to the Luvinas. The commanderâs probably been waiting eagerly.â
âYes, please take us there!â
A short distance from the passenger ship, the Luvinas was moored.
When we climbed the boarding ramp, uniformed men and women stood ready to receive us.
âCaptain, the commander has been waiting for you.â
âUnderstood.â
One of the female officers caught my eye and smiled brightly.
âSo youâre Skye, huh? The captainâs been talking about you. Wow, youâre such a cute kidâIâm surprised!â
I wasnât used to talking to older women, so my heart beat a little faster.
âSkye! Donât get all gooey-eyed like that!â
(Wait⊠why am I the one getting scolded!?)
The woman just chuckled softly.
Inside the Luvinas, everything looked far more refined than any warship Iâd seen in magazines.
It had no unnecessary decorationsâsimple, elegant, and functional. Beauty born of purpose.
(So this is what a cutting-edge battleship looks like)
While I was thinking that, we stopped in front of a door.
âCommander, Iâve brought Skye.â
âSend them in.â
The door slid open, and we entered.
âThank you for accepting the invitation, Skye.â
A man sitting behind a large antique wooden desk greeted me warmly.
âHuh? Havenât I seen you somewhere beforeâŠ?â
He twirled a small tool in his fingers before tucking it into his breast pocket.
âThe mechanic guy!â
âHey, Skye!â
âAhâsorry!â
âHahaha, itâs fine! âMechanic guyâ isnât wrong anyway.â
The manâapparently the commanderâdidnât seem bothered at all and laughed heartily.
âAh, pardon me for the late introduction. Iâm Sergio Galvard, commander of the Third Fleet.â
âUm, Iâm Skye.â
âAnd Iâm Mile!â
âAnd I am the Great Spirit Nokti!â
As always, Nokti puffed out his chest with exaggerated pride. Come on, NoktiâŠ
âHahaha, lively bunch youâve got there.â
âSorry about thatâŠâ
âWhen we met the other day, you said you wanted to ârideâ one of these ships, remember? Thatâs why I invited you. Soâhow was it, actually riding on one?â
âAh, yes! It was totally different from what I imagined a warship would be like. It felt⊠refined somehow. Honestly, it didnât even feel like a âship built for war.ââ
âHmm. Sharp observation. Youâre right, actuallyâthis vessel is a relic.â
âEh!? This ship is a relic!?â
âThatâs right. We unearthed it from an ancient ruin and restored it using the power of the spirits. âŠBut keep that to yourselfâitâs classified.â
âO-of course!â
He smiled as he watched our reactions, clearly amused.
(Heâs totally enjoying thisâŠ)
âI believe this ship wasnât originally designed as a battleship, but rather for exploration.â
âExploration?â
âYesâperhaps to uncover the worldâs secrets, or something like that. Haha.â
For some reason, I couldnât help but feel that what he said was true.
I didnât have proof, but⊠it just felt right.
âAh yes, you came here to buy a flying ship at the Factory, didnât you?â
âYes, thatâs right.â
âThen allow me to write you a letter of introduction. Show it to a man named Gran at the Factoryâheâll make sure youâre treated well.â
ââŠBut only give it directly to Gran. To no one else.â
âThank you so much for your kindness!â
After expressing our gratitude, we left the room.
Captain Reina showed us around the Luvinas, and after thanking everyone politely, we disembarked.
âââ
âHey, heyâlook! Isnât that the Factory?â
Ahead of us rose a cluster of dome-shaped buildings.
Rounded structures lined up neatly in a row.
âThe sign back there said so tooâmust be it.â
Each buildingâs entrance was a glass-fronted gallery, displaying various products.
Customers peered at exhibits while staff explained their features.
âThe letter from that traveling merchant said it was for the Fourth Factory, right?â
âYeah. The Fourth Factory is famous for its flying ships.â
âAh! Look there!â
Mile pointed ahead. In the gallery window of one building, model ships and full-sized craft were on display, with a large â4â emblazoned above the entrance.
âThatâs it for sure. Letâs go!â
We exchanged a determined nod and walked toward the building with the big â4â sign.
