Chapter 2
If I had known, I wouldâve said âMr. Veiltâ politely instead of âBelt.â
I only said that to show him I wasnât easy to deal with â but instead, I accidentally scored points.
More than that, there was something odd about what heâd just said.
âServe the bossâŠ? Are you referring to the Duke?â
Muttering to himself, he stopped mid-sentence, bent forward, and brought his serious face close to mine before whispering softly.
âYes. This is a highly confidential matter⊠Iâll explain on the way to the Dukeâs mansion.â
I leaned in just as seriously and whispered back.
âI have absolutely no intention of going.â
Why was he so sure Iâd go with him?
Mr. Veilt straightened up again and said, without a hint of regret,
âThatâs very unfortunate.â
He adjusted his glasses and, like a true vice representative of the Eclipse Guild, twisted my arm with the perfect leverage.
âAre you aware that William Angela is still looking for you?â
ââŠâŠâ
I knew William wouldnât give up easily, but I didnât think heâd still be so persistent.
Itâs already been four years since I ran away from home.
âThe Marquis Kennedy has taken quite a liking to you, Miss Titia. He told William that heâs willing to wait as long as it takes, as long as he can find you and have you standing beside him at the wedding.â
ââŠâŠâ
âIf Miss Titia marries Marquis Kennedy, William is also set to receive a hefty dowry payment.â
William⊠should I just kill him?
My whole body trembled with rage. Even the former Baron Angela, who never liked me much, would never have tried to sell me off for money.
As I quietly bit my lip, Mr. Veilt looked straight at me and added,
âThereâs no way William Angela would miss such a golden opportunity. Even if it takes time, heâll find you. And if he canâtâwell, I could help him find you instead.â
âWhy would you help him? Do you know how expensive it is to hire the Eclipse Guild?â
âIâd offer that service for free.â
âWhy on earth would you do that?!â
Why would anyone go out of their way to help that despicable man?
âIf youâd rather I didnât, then please come with me. Meet the boss.â
From the look of things, if I didnât accept his terms, heâd hand me straight over to William without a second thought.
But on the other hand⊠if he was resorting to threats, that meant I was valuable to him somehow.
Why?
Why would someone who could have anything he wanted come all the way here to pick up a runaway noblewoman from a minor baronâs family?
And personally, at that?
It didnât make any sense. After sorting through my tangled thoughts, I spoke.
âIf Iâm that important, then I should at least hear the terms first.â
âOf course. If you accomplish what we want, weâll reward you handsomely. Moreover, weâll ensure that neither Marquis Kennedy nor William Angela can ever lay a hand on you again.â
Tempting. No â it was an offer I should have been thanking him for.
William would sell me off a hundred times over if there was money to be made.
I canât keep running forever. This offer makes sense to accept.
Still, I was a little worried about what would happen if I failed. It was the Eclipse Guild, after all.
Before they became heroes, theyâd ruled the underworld with merciless cruelty.
Even if theyâd supposedly turned over a new leaf and were now admired across the empire â a nature like that doesnât just vanish.
With unease in my voice, I asked cautiously,
â…What if I fail?â
âAs long as you keep the secret, nothing bad will happen to you. Youâll still receive fair compensation.â
âNo⊠killing or anything like that?â
âThat mightâve been true before, but our boss is a Duke now. He canât just go around killing people anymore.â
It was obvious that a task this difficult would come with generous conditions.
But whether I accepted or not, there was no real loss for me.
In fact, it was probably the best deal I could get â because of the empireâs ridiculous family law.
To summarize: noblewomen are not recognized as independent individuals until marriage. Their legal rights are entirely controlled by their immediate family.
In other words, until I married and changed my surname, my entire life legally belonged to my guardian â William.
What a disgusting law.
A law that trampled personal freedom like this shouldâve been abolished ages ago.
But since it had been made by the âfounding generation of old men,â the imperial family never bothered to do anything about it.
After all, it wasnât their problem.
So, my deliberation didnât last long.
âFine.â
Mr. Veilt nodded, as if my agreement had been a foregone conclusion.
âThen letâs leave right away. Do you need to pack anything?â
âJust a few clothes.â
âPlease hurry. William Angela is on his way here as we speak.â
âExcuse me?! You couldâve started with that!â
I dashed into my room and frantically threw things into a bag.
* * *
In the original story, it ended with a âAnd they lived happily ever after,â
so I had no idea what went wrong for them to suddenly need me.
Inside the smoothly rolling carriage, Mr. Veilt didnât clear up my confusion. Instead, he pulled something from his briefcase and warned,
âBefore meeting the boss, I must make something clear. Everything that happens at the Dukeâs estate is strictly confidential. Youâll have to sign a nondisclosure agreement. Should you break it, under the Eclipse Guildâs lawâ yes.â
âExcuse me, whatâs with the âyesâ? You canât just end sentences halfway like that.â
He smiled and illustrated the missing part with his hand â drawing his thumb across his throat.
Got it. Loud and clear.
âSince you understand, please press your thumbprint here.â
Not that I was the type to blab, but still â I remembered the good advice to always read contracts carefully and examined it thoroughly before pressing my thumb into the empty box.
Both copies shimmered faintly before a thin glowing thread wrapped around my thumb and vanished.
He tucked one copy into his case, kept the other for himself, and reminded me:
âIf you break the contract â yes.â
Please stop ending your sentences like that.
âNow then, I can speak freely. Let me tell you about our bossâs⊠gloomy days.â
And with that, he began to ramble about the Dukeâs melancholy diary.
âYou see, the reason our once-evil boss turned over a new leaf was, as you know, because of Saint Yubelline MortĂ©.â
But Saint Yubelline Morté⊠had chosen another man.
He looked out the carriage window with a wistful expression, even though it was closed.
âFirst loves never work out, do they?â
âWell, the Saint and the Crown Prince were each otherâs first loves.â
âUgh.â
He made a weird sound, then coughed awkwardly to cover it up.
âAhem, well â thatâs a special case. Anyway, after the Saint abandoned him, our boss became⊠very, veryâŠâ
âTwisted?â
âIt wouldâve been better if he had. I actually miss the days when he did bad things and laughed as others suffered.â
Thatâs⊠a strange thing to miss.
His eyes even shimmered nostalgically as he spoke.
âBut our boss has already beenâŠâ
âExorcised.â
âHuh? Ah, well, I suppose you could put it that way. Though frankly, he was too far gone for an exorcism to fixââ
ââŠâŠâ
âConfidential. Yes.â
âYes.â
I made an âOKâ sign with my fingers.
âAnyway, after whatever happened with the Saint, he locked himself in his room right after sealing the Demon of Serael. We thought heâd get over it in a few days, but no. A year passed, and he only got worse. Another year later, he still hasnât come out.â
âImpressive that heâs kept his position that long.â
Usually in cases like this, someone else would overthrow the boss and take his place.
âI canât live without him.â
ââŠâŠâ
Ah. A devoted man.
Maybe thatâs why the heroine dumped the Duke â because of this obsessive aide guarding him.
âThe Eclipse Guild has a grim reputation, but weâre unmatched in loyalty and trust.â
Unmatched in what, exactly?
In making people disappear?
âThatâs⊠not what I asked. So the Dukeâs become a recluse?â
âStraightforward as always. Yes, the bottom line is â the boss hasnât left his room.â
He made a ârock and rollâ hand gesture â index and pinky raised â to indicate the number two.
Who even counts like that?
With a heavy sigh, he added solemnly,
âFor two whole years.â
Please put your fingers down. I canât focus.
âHasnât bathed in two years, either?â
âThatâs what youâre curious about? Remarkable. Fortunately, the boss is obsessively clean â he still bathes regularly. Yes.â
âYes.â
âSo Miss Titaime only has one task to accomplish.â
âItâs Titia.â
Ignoring my correction, he continued dramatically,
âWithin a year â get our boss out of that damned room. If possible, make him smile again.â
So, in other words, Duke Gervant had locked himself in his room and lost his smile.
Could someone really become like that just because they were dumped?
If so, maybe what he needed was a visit from the cause herself.
âWhy not ask the Saint to help? If she came to see him, heâd probably come out right away.â
He sighed deeply, as if Iâd said something terribly naĂŻve.
