Episode 9 â Younger Brother, Baek Ha-jun (4)
Baek Lee kang was weak.
No one knew this better than he did himself. With his crippled body, he could never defeat his younger brother, who was born with divine martial talent, through straightforward means.
If he couldnât strike with the beanbag from afar, he would have to touch his opponent directly.
If he couldnât catch Ha-junâs movement with his eyes closed, then he needed to make Ha-jun stop.
He had to erase his own presence completely.
That was the planâand Lee kang succeeded in hiding himself.
âHoh⊠I half-doubted you, but you truly did it,â
said the Immortal Divine Sword, his tone impressed.
Lee kang dared not reply. He thought he had grown used to infusing intent into his body, but this was something else entirely.
There was a vast difference between touching what does not exist and making what exists seem nonexistent.
Yet, completely immersed in a state of no-mind, Lee Kang filled his body with intent. His flesh grew light, his steps silent.
Though even a soft breeze could have toppled him, his senses sharpened in that fragile stillness.
Using the sound of his brotherâs rough breathing as a guide, he unfolded the  Taeeumgyeong  Meridian Technique and moved forward.
It felt like becoming one of those astronauts heâd once seen on TV in his past lifeâwalking across the moon.
Quietly, softly, he approached and struck Ha-jun with the beanbag.
âThe more I see you, the more remarkable you are,â
said the Immortal Divine Sword, unable to hide his amusement.
And thus, Lee kang won.
That night, immediately after his victory, Lee kang sought to exercise his right as the winner.
But seeing Ha-junâs pale face and Nung Ji-pyeong standing beside him, I-gang decided to call his brother to his quarters the next day instead.
Ha-jun came quietly, awkward and hesitantâit was, after all, their first proper meeting in three years.
âThen, itâs not really that I refuseâŠâ
I-gang didnât bother with preamble.
He told Ha-jun to formally declare himself as the heir of the Baek .
Ha-jun had been designated as the next head but never officially recognized by the clan elders.
âHonestly, itâs stranger that the procedure hasnât been done yet,â
Lee kang said coldly.
To become the heir, two conditions were needed: the patriarchâs nomination and the elder councilâs approval. Ha-jun only had the first.
Ha-junâs voice trembled. âIf I do that⊠thereâs no turning back.â
âDonât say such pathetic things,â Lee Kang cut him off.
âThereâs been no turning back since the moment I was born with broken meridians.â
Even though his tone was calm, Ha-junâs eyes quivered faintly.
âI wasnât joking before,â Lee kang continued. âI have no interest in that seat. Youâll be the heir.â
âHyungâŠâ
âI wonât live past twenty anyway. You handle the bothersome workâIâll live freely.â
Ha-junâs face contorted, his throat tightening. It wasnât the first time Lee kang had seen that expression.
âGood grief, what a stubborn boy,â
the Immortal Divine Sword muttered.
âHe probably thinks Iâm just saying that to be nice again,â Lee kang thought dryly.
He added with a sigh, âI mean it this time. Every word.â
âY-yeah⊠okayâŠâ
Lee kang sighed again. The Immortal Divine Sword chuckled softly.
âYou canât blame your brother alone. Not wanting to become head is unusual, after all.â
âWe just have different values. And Iâve got other things to do than waste time chasing a title.â
With his modern mindset, Lee kang had no desire for an empty, ceremonial position.
Especially since the Immortal Divine Sword had told him of a possible way to extend his lifespanâsomething he needed to investigate.
âAbout what you said yesterday,â Lee kang began.
âWhat part?â
âYou said I took everything from youâthe heirship, and Mother.â
Ha-junâs face darkened instantly. Lee kang clicked his tongue and handed him a plate.
âEat first.â
â…This is?â
âGrilled rice cake with honey.â
Normally, servants brought his meals, but this time I-gang had cooked it himself. It was one of Ha-junâs childhood favorites, alongside dumpling stew.
âWow, itâs been forever.â
He bit into the warm, slightly crispy rice cake dipped in honey. The sweetness melted away the cold expression on his faceâand Lee kang seized the moment.
âForget whether what you said was nonsense or not. I want to know why you think that way.â
Ha-jun hesitated. âIt just⊠came to me one day.â
âThe heir thing, maybe. But about Mother? There had to be a reason.â
âMotherâs death was from illness,â Lee kang said firmly.
âShe fell ill again after giving birth to you. Father kept it quiet, but how did you find out?â
Ha-jun looked conflicted. âUncle told me.â
âWhat?â
âHe said something by mistake while talking about Mother. He asked me to forget it, but I couldnât.â
âBy mistake, huh.â
Ha-jun nodded. âHe looked really troubled about it. But I kept pressing him.â
Lee kang frowned. It was possibleâa slip of the tongue. The matter had been kept quiet but wasnât truly forbidden knowledge.
Yet the Immortal Divine Sword suddenly snarled:
âUncle? You mean that wretch Baek Jin-tae?â
âHeâs one of the few decent men in this clan. Why call him a wretch?â
âBecause of that fool, my  Taeeumgyeong Meridian Technique lost its proper name!â
Lee kang ignored the spiritâs personal grudge. His uncle, Baek Jin-tae, was a gentle manâone of the few who didnât despise himâand currently away on sect business.
âGentlemen always reek of deceit,â
the sword spirit grumbled, and lee kang wisely said nothing.
Ha-jun spoke again. âIf I become the heir, what will you do?â
It was a fair question. Once succession was official, lee kangâs position would weaken. He couldnât even remain as a retainer.
âWho knows? Thereâd be nothing left for me here.â
âThen youâd leave the clan?â
âProbably.â
âNo!â
âCareful,â lee kang muttered. âYouâll make me deaf. Keep your dignity.â
Ha-junâs sudden shout was almost comical coming from someone who usually acted distant.
âLeave home? Where would you goââ
âStop making that face,â Lee Kang said dryly. âYouâll get even uglier.â
âAh⊠yeah. Iâm ugly, unlike you.â
Ha-jun rubbed his face, embarrassed, and Lee Kang chuckled. The boy would grow up to break hearts someday, despite his protests.
âFlashy face for such a fool,â
the Immortal Divine Sword scoffed, and Lee kang agreed inwardly.
âI donât want to just wait around to die,â Lee Kang said at last. âSo Iâll try to fix my body.â
Ha-jun shot up, almost breaking his chair. âYou found a way?â
âNot exactly. Itâs not certainâand it wonât cure me completely.â
Before fighting the goblin, the Immortal Divine Sword had promised him a clue to extend his life. Lee Kang had decided to follow that clue.
âDid you contact the Celestial Healer?â
âNo, and even if I did, I doubt even he could fix severed meridians.â
The Celestial Healerâthe most renowned doctor in the orthodox worldâhad vanished long ago.
But I-gang didnât plan to rely on medicine.
âI intend to visit Cheongrim.â
âCheongrimâŠ?â
âYes. I want to ask them to examine my body.â
It was only natural that Ha-jun looked surprised.
Cheongrim was a martial sect, one of the great Daoist factionsâon par with the Nine Sects and One Alliance.
âIâve been reading,â I-gang said.
âBooks?â
âYou know the Daoist sectsâMudang, Hwasan, Cheongseong, Kunlun?â
âOh, they make elixirs and practice alchemy, right?â
âExactly. But Cheongrim is different. Theyâve preserved true Daoist internal arts.â
âTheir meridian techniques are said to be extraordinary,â Ha-jun murmured.
âRight. If anyone can help someone born with severed meridians, it might be them.â
The Immortal Divine Sword had confirmed it himself:
âCheongrimâs elders were exceptional. They might be able to ease your illness.
I once aided them in life and earned their tokenâshow it, and theyâll help.â
But finding that token would be the first challenge.
âCheongrimâs far away,â Ha-jun noted.
âYesâand Father will need convincing.â
It would take time, perhaps weeks, to find the token and reach Cheongrim.
Then Ha-jun said something unexpected.
âActually⊠that chance might come sooner than you think.â
âWhat?â
âCheongrimâs people are visiting our clanâin four days. Theyâll be coming with other noble families.â
Lee Kang blinked, then grinned.
âPerfect.â
If they were coming here, all he needed was to find the token first.
âThen youâd best locate it before they arrive,â
the Immortal Divine Sword warned.
âI hid it behind traps to deter grave robbers. Go alone, and youâll die.â
âAnd what do you expect me to do? I donât have subordinates.â
âYouâve got a perfectly usable helper sitting right there.â
Lee Kang looked up. Ha-jun had finished the rice cakes and was eyeing the empty plate, too shy to ask for more.
âHey.â
âYeah?â
âWhatâs your schedule tomorrow?â
âNothing much. Just training.â
âGood. Youâre coming with me.â
Ha-jun blinked. âWhereâŠ?â
âOutside.â
âOutside the manor?â
âYes. Donât like it?â
Ha-junâs face lit up. âI love it!â
At dawn, Ha-jun crept quietly to the outer courtyard, dark circles under his eyes from excitement.
He had barely slept.
He told me to bring a sword, he thought nervously.
Guess itâs not just a trip to the market after allâŠ
Still, he couldnât help feeling thrilled. At twelve years old, heâd rarely left the clan grounds, never without guards.
And now, the brother he thought hated him was personally taking him out.
Maybe theyâd even buy sweets together.
Finding a quiet, pine-screened corner of the outer wall, Ha-jun glanced around.
The inner compound was heavily guarded, but the outer wall was broad, with blind spots perfect for slipping out.
He saw no patrols and leapt.
Tak!
Stepping on a jutting stone, he grabbed the eaves, pulled himself up, and vaulted over the seven-foot wall.
Thud.
It was a perfect leapâenough to make Nung Ji-pyeong applaud, had he seen it.
But when Ha-jun looked ahead, a ragged stranger stood there.
âHyâhyungâŠ?â
At first, heâd thought it was a beggar.
But it was I-gangâhair loose, dressed in shabby old clothes, face smudged with dirt.
âWhy do you look like thatâŠ?â
âI could ask you the same,â I-gang said flatly. âI told you not to draw attention.â
âI came out quietly!â
âI meant when walking around! You might as well hang a sign that says âBaek Ha-jun, heir to the clan.ââ
Ha-jun looked down at himself: neatly tied hair, silk robes, jeweled belt, jeweled sword.
âUhâŠâ
âGood grief,â I-gang muttered. âRich brats whoâve never snuck out beforeâŠâ
He sighed, walked over, and suddenly rubbed Ha-junâs face with his hand.
âUgh! What are you doing?!â
âDirt.â
Ha-junâs once-handsome face was now as grimy as I-gangâs.
âYou thought we were going out to play?â
ââŠWerenât we?â
Ha-junâs lip trembled. He now looked like a farmerâs sonâand just as miserable.
But Lee Kang was merciless.
âNope. Weâre going to work.
Those clothes are too cleanâroll on the ground a bit.â
And so, obediently, Ha-jun rolled in the dirt.
For some reason, he felt tears prickling at the corners of his eyes.
