Part 2 Chapter 54
Nike was ready to be scolded.
Even if his father was so disappointed that he said, āIāll never see your face again,ā Nike had accepted it.
āIāll only rewind time if Father collapses from shock or something.ā
With that thought, he carefully opened his eyes.
The Emperor had stood up.
His mouth hung open, his finger pointed at Nikeācompletely frozen.
Then, without saying a wordā¦
Thud.
He fell weakly back into his chair.
āFather!ā
Nike quickly rushed over to check on him.
āAre you alright?ā
āHaa⦠haa⦠fuuā¦ā
The Emperor was breathing heavily, clearly shaken.
āā¦Shall I pretend you didnāt hear?ā
āDonāt you dare!ā
The Emperor shouted, making Nike flinch and shut his mouth.
At that momentā
The doors to the office burst open.
It was the Crown Prince, entering confidently.
āTake His Majesty to his chambers! Call the physician! He must rest immediately!ā
āYes, Your Highness!ā
āYes, Your Highness!ā
The well-trained attendants quickly rushed to the Emperorās side. Supporting his staggering body with care, they led him out of the office.
āYou did well, little brother!ā
The Crown Prince, looking pleased, approached Nike, who looked utterly drained.
āLeave the rest to me. When Father recovers, Iāll explain everything more thoroughly. Of course, Iāll make sure to stress your reasonsāthat you had no choice.ā
āā¦ā¦ā
Nike blinked, his eyes empty of focus.
āIt was for your lover, wasnāt it?ā
āā¦Yes.ā
āBefore the rewind and after, every timeāit was for the one you loved. In a way, thatās very consistent.ā
āā¦ā¦ā
Nike wasnāt sure if his brother was teasing him. But the Crown Prince only smiled wider, as if happy that things were going well.
āYouāve worked hard!ā
***
Emperor Alphonseās memories
He recalled old memories.
The first time he saw Ryanā¦
A tiny boy, just learning to talk, sitting on his fatherās knee.
The Emperor himself was kneeling on the ground in front of him.
āThis is the one you will serve in the future,ā Edgar had said with a grin.
The child laughed innocently, not knowing the cruelty of the moment.
Laterāon the battlefield, filled with monsters.
A young man had appeared like a hero.
āYour Majesty, itās dangerous! Why are you here?!ā
It was Melvin Bassenberg.
Panting, he pulled the Emperor behind him.
And thenāthe monsters fell dead in an instant.
His ability: Death.
It was like watching a god.
Every beast that came into Melvinās sight dropped lifelessly to the ground.
āThank you⦠thank you so much,ā the Emperor had said, filled with gratitude.
Though he hated the name āBassenberg,ā Melvin had saved the Empire countless times.
But thenāMelvin suddenly froze. The monsters surged again.
āā¦Lord Melvin?ā
Melvin only bit his lip, avoiding the Emperorās gaze.
And behind him, Edgarās voice rang out:
āMy apologies, Your Majesty. My foolish brother is causing trouble. He forgets he may only fight with Your Majestyās official command.ā
That ācommandā required endless bribes of gold and land.
The Emperor clenched his fists so tightly his palms bled.
Edgar smirked.
And Melvināhead bowed, powerlessāobeyed like a puppet.
The Emperor had been furious.
Why?
Why would someone with such power bow to a devil like Edgar?
Why save the Empire, yet submit to him?
Back then, it had only seemed like betrayal.
But now, Alphonse understood.
Melvin had no choice.
And now Ryan, too, had hidden his power all this time, waiting for the right day.
āBain.ā
Lying in bed, Alphonse called to his son, the Crown Prince.
āYes, Father.ā
Bain couldnāt hide his joy. Alphonse gave a small laugh too.
He had protected this son desperately, so he wouldnāt know the same humiliation.
Now Bainās unshaken spirit burned brighter than ever.
And⦠Alphonse thought of his other son.
The one he loved painfully, all his life.
āBring Nike to me.ā
***
The Crown Prince soon came to fetch us.
āThe Emperor wants to see you. Iāve explained most things already. He just has a few questions. Answer sincerely.ā
āUgh! But why do I have to go too?!ā
We waited in the audience chamber next to the Emperorās room.
Sweat ran down my back. My hands trembled in my lap.
āIām so scared⦠so, so scaredā¦ā
From the moment I entered the palace, the Emperorās overwhelming presence had terrified me.
My mind went blank, my vision spun.
āI-I didnāt do anything wrong! I just got dragged into the rewind!ā
Fear made me want to deny everything.
Thenā
āBania.ā
Nike held my trembling hands.
āItās okay. Donāt be scared.ā
He actually looked calmer, as if it was easier with me beside him to share the scolding.
āBut what if His Majesty refuses to stamp our papers?ā
I pointed at the marriage documents lying on the table.
For them to be valid, both familiesā seals were requiredāincluding the Emperorās.
āThen my brother will do it,ā Nike said.
But noāHis Majesty himself had asked for the papers.
Was it really to stamp them?
āOr⦠what if he takes them only to rip them apart?ā
At that, Nikeās face went pale.
āIf that happens⦠then we run.ā
āā¦What?!ā
Why so extreme?!
āOf course, after we finish what we need to do. Weāll leave soon anyway.ā
Then he looked at me seriously.
āWe canāt marry freely as long as Iām under Fatherās control.ā
āā¦So?ā
āWeāll cut ties.ā
He meantāabandon his royal title.
āWould you hate me if I werenāt a prince anymore?ā
āHate you? Never!ā
I threw myself into his arms.
Nike hugged me tightly.
āI just didnāt expect that answer. But Iāll take care of you. You donāt need to sew or work.ā
Tears welled in my eyes.
āBut weāll have children. Weāll need money. So Iāll help with sewing too.ā
We dreamed of running away, giving up our status, and living simply.
Oddly enoughāit sounded happy.
Nikeās arms trembled around me.
We stayed like that, holding each other.
Untilā
The Emperorās door opened.
But instead of calling us in⦠he himself stepped out.
We froze, still clinging to each other like guilty lovers.
It was the very same Emperor who had collapsed in shock just hours earlier, learning of our love.
āDarling⦠maybe weāre cursed.ā
Slowly pulling away from Nike, I thought:
āOtherwise, why would the whole world keep pushing us to the edge like this?ā
The Emperor sighed heavily, like a man facing two cockroaches in his house.
He walked toward us.
Even in this trial, we still had hope.
Because with the Song of Rewind, nothing was truly hopeless.
I nudged Nikeās thigh.
āDonāt do it,ā the Emperor said immediately.
āAck!ā
My too-honest loverāhe always obeyed, even though he couldāve just rewound time to erase it.
āI wonāt stamp it,ā the Emperor said, sitting across from us.
My eyes widened.
Then I saw the golden seal in his hand.
āYes, Father!ā
Bang!
Nike shot up in excitement, but slammed his knee on the table.
āOwā! I-I wonāt do it again!ā
