Chapter 62
Â
Dare to Harm My Wife?
âSo this is the place? You mean she really lives in such a tiny house?â
âYes, Your Highness.â
At the knightâs reply, Daimond muttered as he studied Maricanâs home.
âWell, that makes it easy to break in. Good. When the woman comes here tonight, capture her and bring her to the cabin. Understood?â
âYes, Your Highness.â
âI canât afford to be recognized, so Iâll head there first. You must bring her to me. Is that clear?â
âYes, Your Highness!â
After glancing one last time at Maricanâs house, Daimond turned away.
***
âSo this is what you call magic tricks? Itâs different from real magic, isnât it?â
âIsnât it amazing? The body disappears except for the head, and even when you cut with a sword, the arms and legs still move!â
As Zelda and Marican chattered in delight, Ruan interjected,
âItâs all just sleight of hand. The body vanishing, the limbs moving after being cutâitâs deception. Magic is real, but stage tricks use devices to fool the eye.â
âRuan!!â
âYour Grace!â
Both Zelda and Marican turned to him at once.
âYes?â
âJust watch and enjoy it, please. When you explain like that, it ruins the fun.â
âAh⊠my apologies. I thought you might not know.â
âEven if I donât know, Iâd rather see it as a performance.â
âYesâŠâ
Ruan lowered his head with an apologetic look.Â
Zelda shook her head in amazement.
âHonestly, it never ceases to amaze me. How can the man known as the God of War and the Empireâs Hero act so meek in front of Rosaline? Anyway, weâve seen the show, letâs grab lunch.â
âTodayâs on me.â
âOh, perfect! Then letâs go somewhere I can finally use my knife again.â
Zelda looped her arm through Maricanâs, and the group headed to a restaurant.
The second day of the festival was packed with performances.
After lunch, Marican, Zelda, and Ruan watched a play and a dance troupeâs show.Â
Time slipped by, and before they knew it, evening has arrived.
âWow⊠when youâre at a festival, you really donât notice the day flying by. It feels like today passed in the blink of an eye.â
âMm. If Rosalineâs happy, then Iâm happy. Iâve been to this festival every year, but never have I enjoyed it as much as this one.â
âWhatâs tomorrowâs event?â
âTomorrow, the performance troupes will be here. Thatâll be worth watching. And thereâs also a swordsmanship tournament.â
âA swordsmanship tournament?â
âYes. But Iâd prefer if Ruan didnât compete.â
âWhy?â
âBecause the winner earns the chance to go to the capital.â
âOh, so first place becomes a knight of the capital?â
âSomething like that. And I donât want you entering. After all, your swordsmanship is already famous throughout the Empire.â
âMay I at least watch?â
âOf course.â
âVery well, Iâll do that.â
âThank you. Letâs part ways here then, and meet again tomorrow.â
âYes, Zelda.â
Marican hugged Zelda before saying goodbye.
âRuan, I had such a good time today, thanks to you.â
âAnd I as well, thanks to Rosaline. Now, one momentâŠâ
Just as they neared home, Ruan suddenly caught Maricanâs arm.
âRuan? Whatâs wrong?â
âShh. Stay behind me.â
His expression went cold as he placed her behind him and slowly walked toward the house.
***
Knock, knock.
âSo, youâve finally arrived! Get inside!â
At Daimondâs voice, the door of the cabin opened.Â
Two knights stumbled in, battered and broken, collapsing onto the floor.
âWhatâwhat is this? I told you to bring me the woman, and you come back like this?â
As if in answer, Ruan stepped inside behind them.
âItâs been a while, hasnât it? Or should I call you Prince Daimond now?â
Why How is he here?!
Cold sweat ran down Daimondâs back.
âR-Ruan⊠why are you here? I heard you had returned to the capital!â
âApparently my warning last time didnât sink in. I told you that once you were exiled, youâd better never crawl out again. I also told you, if we met again, I wouldnât stop at breaking your limbs. And yet here you areânot only crawling out of exile but daring to come after my wife?â
âD-Duke⊠why are you even here? I was told you were in the capitalâŠâ
Tricked again? Damn that duke!
As Ruan leveled his sword at him, Daimond instinctively stepped back.Â
Ruan gave a cold smile.
âI see no need to explain myself. Just know this: this time, exile wonât be the end for you, Your Highness.â
As he advanced with that chilling smile, Daimond suddenly hurled a smoke bomb to the ground.
âKill him! Kill the duke!â
Smoke filled the cabin.Â
Hidden knights rushed out, blades aimed at Ruan.
âKhâ!â
Ruan struck them down one after another, but in the chaos Daimond slipped out the back door.
âWh-whereâs the horse?â
A trembling servant outside stammered, âTh-the duke already freed them, Your Highness.â
âD-damn it!â
One knight burst from the cabin and rushed to Daimond.
âYour Highness! Listen carefully. If you run for about twenty minutes that way, youâll find a horse tied to a tree. Take it and ride to the capital.â
âBut I havenât evenââ
I didnât even get to see her yet!
When Daimond turned toward Phenomenon Village, the knight seized his arms.
âForget the dukeâs wife for now! Once you become crown prince, you can take her later. But you must survive tonight!â
Kaimon had given strict orders: no matter the cost, the prince must be brought back alive.Â
Even if every knight perished, Daimond had to return.
âWhich way?â
âOver there, Your Highness. Hurry, before the duke comes!â
At the knightâs urging, Daimond ran.Â
His lungs burned, his stomach ached, but fear of Ruanâs blade drove him onward.
Duchess⊠for now, Iâll retreat.Â
But mark my wordsâIâll come back for you.
After twenty minutes of running, he found the horse.Â
Glancing once toward Phenomenon Village, Daimond mounted and vanished into the forest.
***
âRuan⊠heâll be all right, wonât he?â
It had been an hour since he told her to stay hidden, locked the door, and disappeared with two knights in tow.
Knock, knock.
âWh-who is it?â
âItâs me, Rosaline.â
âRuan!â
Marican flung open the door.Â
Ruan stepped in, drenched in sweat, his body spattered with blood.
âDid anyone come here while I was gone?âÂ
He asked as he checked her for injuries.
âNo, no one. But Ruan, are you hurt? This bloodâdonât tell meâŠâ
Ruan shook his head. âItâs not mine. I expected only two knights, but the prince had smoke bombs and more men hidden inside.â
âAnd Daimond?â
âUnfortunately, he escaped.â
âI seeâŠâ
âDonât worry. He wonât return here anytime soon. Heâs likely gone back to the capital.â
So⊠is it over?
At his words, Marican felt her tension dissolve, and she collapsed weakly into a chair.
âRosaline!â
âIâm fine⊠just startled, thatâs all.â
She had believedâeven if she was hatedâthat her elder sister would never betray her to Daimond.Â
She had wanted to believe that.Â
But now⊠that last thread of trust had snapped.Â
And strangely, she felt calm.
Itâs over. I have nothing to do with them anymore.
When she looked up, Ruan was watching her, his torn clothes revealing glimpses of wounds.
âYouâre injured.â
He hastily pulled his clothes closed. âAh, just a scratch. It was cramped, thatâs all.â
But the gash was deeper than he admitted.
âWait here.â
âRosaline?â
She rushed outside.
âRosaline!â
Panicked, Ruan followedâonly to find her returning with a first-aid kit.
âI went to get this. I remembered you told me there were strangers nearby, and I was scared at first⊠but I couldnât let you treat yourself.â
She pulled him to the table. âTake off your shirt.â
ââŠRight now?â
âYes. I need to treat your wounds.â
Ruan blushed. âItâs still daylight, thoughâŠâ
âWhat are you talking about? Off with it.â
ââŠVery well.â
With a disappointed sigh, he removed his shirt.Â
Their puppy padded over, wagging its tail.
âWere you frightened earlier?â Ruan asked.
âA little⊠but with you nearby, I felt safe.â
âI see. Seems this little one tried hard to guard you as well.â
At his words, the dog barked as if to agree.
âYou two have really grown close,â Marican smiled.
âPerhaps because we both love the same person.â
ââŠWhat?â
Her cheeks flushed.Â
She quickly looked down and began cleaning his wounds.Â
His chest bore deep scars, each one evidence of the battles he had fought.
âTheyâre not⊠unsightly?â he asked quietly.
âOf course not. Theyâre proof of how hard youâve fought to protect the Empire.â
She gently wrapped his chest in bandages.
âDoes it hurt?â
âNo. Thank you, Rosaline⊠for treating me.â
âNo⊠itâs me who should thank you. Youâre always protecting me. Iâm grateful, Ruan.â
âItâs only what I should do.â
When she finished bandaging him, Marican began tidying the kit.
âAll done. You must be tired after the festival and this fight. Please, get some rest.â
But as she stood to leave, Ruan caught her hand.
âRosaline⊠no, my wife. There is something I must tell you.â
