Chapter 11 Unsure Whether to Go In
Xie Chengyuâs expression darkened. A month ago, he had been schemed against, and it was Xu Ruoxin who had saved himâending up pregnant because of it. She wasnât as contemptible as others thought.
He rose and said calmly, âStep outside with me.â
Without waiting, he left the ward first. Nan Xiaoâs face went pale, but she followed him into the corridor.
There, Xie Chengyu said, âIâll remind Ruoxin not to trouble you again. But you should also tell your friend not to insult her anymore.â
Nan Xiao bit her lip so hard it nearly broke the skin. But with the mask covering her face, Xie Chengyu couldnât see.
She nodded, wanting to answer âAlright, I knowâ, but found herself unable to utter a word.
Right now, pain pressed so heavy she just wanted to leave this place as quickly as possible.
Noticing her odd state, Xie Chengyu asked, âWhatâs wrong with you?â
Nan Xiao shook her head. âIâm fine. Iâll go first.â
With that, she walked away quickly, afraid that if she stayed even a moment longer, her tears would fall.
What kind of man was Xie Chengyu?
He didnât seem entirely cruel. From the beginning, his attitude had been clearâ
She was brought into the Xie family to ward off misfortune for Old Madam Xie. Their marriage was just a transaction. He would not love her, but he would give her plenty of money as compensation.
For the past three years, every month he had transferred her money. At the time of marriage, he had already given her large sums of property. By that standard, he had done nothing wrong.
And yet, Nan Xiao still felt overwhelming sorrow.
All because she loved himâbut his eyes only held Xu Ruoxin.
Outside the hospital, Nan Xiao pressed her chest tightly, leaning on the wall just to stay upright.
After steadying herself, she took a taxi back to the villa. At the same time, Xie Chengyu returned to the ward.
âChengyu,â Xu Ruoxin lifted herself slightly, asking, âMiss Nan didnât look well just now. Is she alright?â
âSheâs fine.â Xie Chengyuâs voice was flat.
Xu Ruoxin glanced at him, then probed carefully, âWhen will we live together? At my last checkup, the doctor said itâs better for prenatal care if both parents are involved.â
Xie Chengyu sat back down, replying, âNan Xiao and I havenât officially divorced yet. It wouldnât be fair to her.â
The implication was clearâhe had no intention of living with her yet. Xu Ruoxinâs eyes reddened instantly.
âChengyu, do you not like me anymore? Do you still resent me for leaving you in university? I know I was wrong.â
Back then, when they were dating, Old Master Xie had investigated her family and discovered her parents were migrant workers. Worse, she was a student at a film academy, likely to become an actress.
Old Master Xie had disapproved on all counts and forced them apart. Xie Chengyu had resisted, but not long after, Xu Ruoxin herself had suggested a breakup.
She hadnât truly wanted to end thingsâonly to test him.
But he had agreed without hesitation, without fighting to keep her as she had hoped. In anger, she went abroad.
When she returned a year later, her temper cooled, ready to reconcileâshe was met with the news that Xie Chengyu was married.
âI donât resent you. Donât overthink,â Xie Chengyu said after a pause.
Then he rose. âI have a meeting at the company. Rest well. Call me if you need anything.â
Leaving the hospital, Xie Chengyu once again thought of Nan Xiaoâs eyes.
There was something magnetic about them. When speaking with her, he found himself drawn in, always trying to read her emotions through them.
Today, she hadnât looked happy. What was wrong with her?
It was just a passing thought. After all, Nan Xiao was, to him, an unimportant person. He quickly dismissed it.
But on the drive back to the company, a strange sense of unease crept in, as though something was missing.
At the office, passing the secretaryâs desk, he noticed the empty tea tableâand suddenly realized what it was.
It was Wednesday. For the past three years, Nan Xiao had always sent over a bowl of Eucommia pigeon soup on Wednesdays. But today, it hadnât come.
He looked away, returned to his office to work, and an hour later left Xie Corporation to head to the old residence for dinner.
At the gates, he spotted a lone figure from afar, standing as if hesitating about whether to enter.
Parking his car, he walked over and asked, âWhy are you standing here?â
Nan Xiao lifted her head, eyes filled with conflict.
âI donât know if I should go inâŠâ
