Chapter 12
My eyes kept roaming around the study.
So this is where Ren oppa works.
The space was as neat and stripped-down as Alperen himselfâspotless, like it was brand-new.
He spent most of his time holed up in the Tower, yet his office was almost too bare. It looked temporary, somehow.
Kind of empty, really.
âIf Iâd known, I wouldâve brought more snacks.â
I emptied the teapot, thinking that, when the door opened and Alperen came in.
âDeli? What are you doing here?â
Judging from his surprise, Eden hadnât reported it. Figuresâhe probably rushed off and forgot. If he hadnât slept, I could hardly blame him. And it looked like he had more to deal with because of meâŠ
âRen oppa!â
I started toward him happilyâthen my stomach lurched.
Huh?
The moment I saw him, my body felt floaty, like I was walking on clouds. Not like being drunk. My heart pounded and a baseless confidence surged, like I could do anything.
Wasnât that tea supposed to calm me down?
This was doing the opposite. Iâm going to cause trouble at this rate!
Sensing something was off, Alperen called, âDeli?â
âOppa, I feel weeeirdâŠâ
I managed to get the words out as my body went limp. He caught me.
Right then, the door flew open and Eden shouted,
âMy lady, Iâm so sorry! You mustnât drink that!â
He was holding a teapotâthe same color as what Iâd just had.
âAhây-you already finished itâŠâ
He stared, ashen, at the empty pot on the table.
An eerie silence fellâbroken by my bright, loopy voice.
âMmm? I already drank it aaall~ Huh? Why is my tongue slurring?â
Eden and Alperen both froze. Honestly, I was the most shocked.
âHeehee, itâs sooo tasty. I want more, pleeease?â
I reached to take the pot; Eden hid it behind his back.
âP-please, my lady, calm downââ
âI said gimmeââ
I swayed, and Alperen steadied me, growling at Eden,
âWhat did you make her drink?â
âOh? Was I not supposed to? Hehe.â
My sunny nonsense only made Alperenâs face turn darker.
âA-a trainee must have put an experimental potion in that teapot. I didnât realize and brought it to youââ
âSo you gave Deli a potion when you donât even know what it is?â
âP-please kill me!â
Eden flattened himself to the floor, but Alperen wasnât having it.
âEven if you die, whatever she drank wonât vanish from her body.â
Eden began shaking like a leaf under the questioning. âI-Iâll check right now!â
âYou came without checking first?â
âS-sorryâhic!â
As the killing aura thickened like someone might actually die, Eden started hiccuping.
âEeep, scary~ Ren oppa, youâre so cold to your staff.â
In a sing-song tone that absolutely wasnât me, I poked the space between his brows and beamed.
âDonât frown. Youâll get wrinkles.â
I swear I would never do this normally. Truly.
âEek! Hic!â
Eden flapped his hands in horror, but I wasnât done. I tugged Alperenâs mouth up at the corners.
âSmiileâ You look best when you smile. Câmon, show me your pearly whites!â
His stone face seemed to meltâthen went up in flames.
âHis face is red~â
ââŠâ
âAlperen is a shy boy~ such a shy boy~â
As I sang my ridiculous song, he exhaled hard and ordered,
ââŠFind out exactly what that potion is. Now.â
âY-yes!â
Eden fled the study like his life depended on it.
What Rodelia had drunk was a potion that maximizes âimprintingââthe so-called âlove potion,â which makes you feel boundless affection for the first person you see.
Worse, hers was an experimental batch with doubled potency, which made brewing an antidote risky; mixing potions could clash and cause internal injuries.
They had no choice but to isolate Rodelia until it wore off.
âMy lady drank more than twice the normal amount,â Eden reported, sweating. âThe effects will likely last until tomorrow morning. Since itâs experimental, there may be unknown side effects.â
He glanced at Rodelia, glued to Alperenâs side. âRight now she seems overly elated and fixated on Your Grace. Itâd be safer to keep watch until it passes.â
âSeems that way,â Alperen said, looking at her, troubled.
She was pressed to his side, eyes sparkling.
âRen oppa, Iâve always wonderedâwhen do you even rest?â
âI plan to rest this weekend.â
âLiar! Your handsomeness never takes a day off! Your beauty doesnât know the meaning of âbreak.ââ
On top of the affection, a nonstop stream of shameless flattery poured outâclearly weâd moved past âadoreâ into âworshipâ from the overdose.
What was surprising was Alperenâs response.
âMy face is your type, Deli?â
Instead of being annoyed, he answered every line. For a man whoâs notoriously frosty to courting ladies, this was unexpected.
Maybe heâs just soft on his friendâs little sister?
Normally, heâd have thrown her out or locked her in a room to spare himselfâbut here he was, feeding her cookies and chatting. His expression was almost⊠sweet. Sweeter than anyone at the Tower had ever seen.
âCâmon. Your face is everyoneâs type. Show me one person who doesnât like you. There isnât one!â
âSo, Deliâdo you like me?â
âOf course! Also, did you know? People lose their memory when they see someone handsome.â
âThatâs a new one.â
âReally? âŠOh! Did you know? People lose their memory when they see someone handsome.â
âDeli, you just said that.â
âOh, really? âŠBut Ren, did you know? People lose their memory when they see someone handsome.â
âHaha. Not listening at all, are you.â
He chuckled and sipped his tea. To a stranger, it might look like an indulgent older brotherâbut Eden, closest to him, wasnât fooled.
The Tower Master looks⊠weirdly flustered.
Every time Rodelia touched him, he twitched, like he was keyed up tight.
Their eyes met. âHow long are you going to stand there?â Alperen asked. âShouldnât you inform Adrian?â
âR-right! Iâll, uh, step out. H-have a nice time!â
Eden bolted, barely aware of what heâd just said.
âTalking nonsense,â Alperen muttered, frowning.
They were trading more of her silly praise when Rodelia suddenly fanned herself and whined,
âOppa, Iâm so hot all of a sudden.â
âDeli?â
âMmm. I think Iâve got a fever.â
He stiffened and put a hand to her forehead. âLet me see.â
Since it was an experimental potion, who knew what would happen? He hovered, worried she might actually fall ill.
âMmm, too hotâŠâ
Unable to bear the heat, Rodelia began untying the ribbon at her blouse.
