Chapter 1: Divorce
“Madam, here is the divorce agreement. Please take a look, and if everything seems fine, just sign it.”
Nan Xiao looked at the agreement being handed to her and felt her brain buzz, as if she couldn’t hear anything else.
“…Madam?”
Seeing her silent for a long time, Zhou Wen waved his hand in front of her eyes.
Nan Xiao snapped back to reality and asked, bewildered, “Xie Chengyu wants a divorce from me?”
She wore a mask, revealing only her bright, clear eyes, which were filled with confusion and sadness. Zhou Wen couldn’t bear it, lowering his gaze.
“Yes, Mr. Xie said that since the old lady has passed away, there is no need for this marriage to continue, so he wants a divorce from you…”
Nan Xiao felt a sharp pain in her heart, but at the same time, there was a sense of relief, as if the sharp blade hanging over her head had finally fallen.
Three years ago, to please Mrs. Xie, she, the disfigured second daughter of the Nan family, had married into the Xie family and became Xie Chengyu’s wife.
However, in these three years, she had only met Xie Chengyu a handful of times—once on their wedding day, and the other time was a month ago, when Mrs. Xie passed away.
In these three years, Xie Chengyu had never returned home, clearly not regarding her as his wife. She had already expected that they would divorce once Mrs. Xie passed away.
“Madam, you—”
Seeing Nan Xiao remain silent for a few minutes, she suddenly picked up the pen and neatly signed her name. Zhou Wen quickly reminded, “You haven’t checked the terms of the agreement…”
“No need.”
Nan Xiao closed the pen and pushed the divorce agreement over.
She didn’t care how much Xie Chengyu would give her, as when the Xie family first asked her to marry him, they had already given her a large compensation, enough to live the rest of her life without worry.
Moreover, she had never married Xie Chengyu for money.
She had fallen for Xie Chengyu back in high school, loved him for eight years, and agreed to marry him three years ago just to fulfill her own dream.
“Please tell him I’ll move out in the next few days. He can come home now.”
Having a woman he didn’t love at home while avoiding it for three years really wasn’t easy for him.
Nan Xiao smiled bitterly, holding back tears as she turned and went upstairs.
“Yanyan, I’ve divorced.”
She walked to the window and called her friend Lin Yan. Lin Yan’s voice was filled with shock, “How did it happen? Did Xie Chengyu bring it up?”
“Yes.”
“How can he be so cruel! It’s one thing that he hasn’t come home in the past three years, but now he dares to ask for a divorce!”
Hearing her friend’s indignation, Nan Xiao bit her lip and said, “It’s nothing, really. When I married him, he said he was only marrying me to please Mrs. Xie. He never liked me.”
Saying this, her fingers gripped the window sill.
Though she told herself to let go, mentioning these things still made her feel sad.
“Sigh, how can you be so silly?” Lin Yan sighed.
As Nan Xiao’s best friend, she knew better than anyone how much Nan Xiao loved Xie Chengyu.
Thinking about all the things Nan Xiao had done for Xie Chengyu over the years, Lin Yan felt it was all a waste.
“You’ve worked so hard these three years, endured so much pain to remove the scars on your face, all for Xie Chengyu to look at you, and now things have turned out like this…”
“It’s fine. After all, my face is my own, and it’s good for me to recover.”
“True, think of it that way! Anyway, it’s over now, just live your best life on your own, and let that bastard go wherever he wants!”
Nan Xiao chuckled at Lin Yan, her tense nerves loosening for a moment.
But when she looked up, seeing the wedding photo on the wall with only herself in it, her heart trembled again.
She took off her mask and looked at her stunning face in the mirror, eyes filled with sorrow.
After all these years of marriage, Xie Chengyu never even knew what she truly looked like.
She had been the famous Mrs. Xie for three years but had also been the laughingstock of the social circle. Now everything was coming to an end, and this could be seen as a new beginning.
